Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been formally charged with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property in Wisconsin, according to court records. The charges follow his arrest in May on suspicion of domestic violence-related offenses. The NFL is currently reviewing the case and considering a potential suspension for Jacobs, which could impact the team just weeks before the new season.
Jacobs turned himself in to Hobart/Lawrence police on May 26 and was released the following day. Initially, he was arrested on felony strangulation, battery – domestic abuse, criminal damage to property – domestic abuse, disorderly conduct – domestic abuse, and intimidation of a victim charges. However, the district attorney's office stated that more evidence was needed before deciding on formal charges. The current charges filed are misdemeanors and are not related to domestic violence.
Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Jacobs' availability, indicating the team might carry an extra running back on the roster as a precaution. "We could. You usually keep 3 or 4 running backs, and I think we have enough to do that," Gutekunst said.
Despite the legal proceedings, Jacobs participated in Packers OTAs earlier this offseason, about a week after his initial arrest. Head Coach Matt LaFleur had described the situation as "business as usual" with Jacobs. Quarterback Jordan Love also commented on the team's awareness of the situation, stating that details were being kept confidential out of respect for the legal process.
The incident in May involved a disturbance at Jacobs' Wisconsin home. 911 calls from the scene, as reported by TMJ4 News, described a chaotic environment with yelling, screaming, and objects being thrown. A neighbor also called 911, reporting that a neighbor had been assaulted. Police were reportedly tracking Jacobs' vehicle after he allegedly drove away from the scene. Deputies and an ambulance arrived at Jacobs' home to meet with the alleged victim before Jacobs later surrendered to police.
