Great White Shark Prompts Huntington Beach Closure

Huntington Beach, California, has closed its waters to the public following reports of a great white shark exhibiting aggressive behavior. The roughly 10- to 12-foot predator was observed near Lifeguard Tower 16 on Tuesday afternoon, leading the Huntington Beach Fire Department to enforce a closure from Seapoint Street to the Huntington Beach Pier.

The beach was expected to reopen Wednesday afternoon, provided no further shark sightings or aggressive behaviors were reported. Officials urged beachgoers to heed posted signs and lifeguard instructions.

This incident occurs amidst a series of unusual marine life encounters along the Southern California coast, which some experts link to unusually warm ocean temperatures associated with a strong El Niño pattern. Recent sightings have included rare hammerhead sharks off Malibu, whale sharks, and venomous sea snakes.

Last month, two sea turtles were also documented nesting on Orange County beaches, marking a rare occurrence for the region. One was found near Seal Beach and another close to the Huntington Beach Pier.
