Gravy Grievances: British Poll Reveals Deep Divisions Over Condiment's Consistency and Preparation
A recent survey indicates that a significant portion of the British population has experienced arguments regarding gravy, with generational differences apparent in preferences.
Arguments over the ideal thickness, color, and preparation of gravy are common among Britons, with a recent poll revealing that 35% of those surveyed have had such disputes. The findings, based on a survey of 2,000 people conducted by Aldi UK, highlight a significant division in how the popular condiment should be served.
Generational differences appear pronounced on the issue, with 56% of Gen-Z respondents reporting gravy-related arguments, compared to only 17% of those over 65. The national preference, according to the poll, leans towards a medium-brown, medium-thick beef gravy made with granules and served with roast beef. An estimated 11 million liters of gravy are consumed weekly in the UK.
Regional preferences also emerged in the survey. Brighton residents showed a strong inclination towards darker gravy, with 37% favoring dark or very dark brown varieties, while Leicester favored lighter shades. Cambridge was identified as the place where gravy is typically the thickest, whereas in Belfast, 6% of people prefer a water-like consistency. In Sheffield, diners tend to prefer a more generous portion, with one in four wanting their entire plate covered and 9% enjoying a meal "swimming in gravy."
Overall, one in three individuals stated that their mother's gravy was the best. The survey also noted that gravy was considered the worst item to run out of during a meal, ranking below meat, potatoes, and Yorkshire puddings. Popular pairings for gravy include bangers and mash (65%), chips (61%), and toad in the hole (51%). Less conventional preferences included consuming gravy with cereal.
Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer of Aldi UK, commented on the findings, stating, "With 13 million units sold each year, our sales prove just how essential gravy is to the nation’s meals."
