John Eryl Parry, known online as Welsh Grandad, is walking 460 miles to raise funds and awareness for cancer research, despite his own health battle. Diagnosed with high-grade bladder cancer and cancer in his right kidney, Parry, who lives in Tendring, Essex, decided to undertake the challenge after a serious fall from a ladder resulted in fractures to his skull, brain bleeds, and broken bones in his neck, back, face, and hands.

His online presence has grown significantly, with tens of thousands of followers on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. He encourages his followers to "be kind to one another" and to approach daily challenges "one step at a time." Parry views himself as fortunate, stating, "I keep telling everybody I'm the luckiest person in the world."

Parry's motivation stems from a desire to contribute despite his diagnosis. "I can't cure cancer, but there's got to be something I can do," he said. His journey has captured the attention of a global audience, who are inspired by his resilience and charitable efforts. His granddaughter encouraged him to share his story online, leading to his widespread recognition. The walk is a testament to his determination to make a positive impact while undergoing his own treatment. John leads the way down a narrow country lane, with tall hedges either side. He holds a walking stick, with his family members walking in a line behind him.
