A 90-year-old tiles tycoon has lost an £850,000 court fight against his grandson, Sebastian Stokes, whom he had sued to reclaim funds used for a house purchase and a luxury wedding. The tycoon, Robert Stokes, who built the family business Stokes Tiles into a substantial company, had hoped his grandson would eventually take over the business.

Court Ruling

Judge Richard Carter dismissed Robert Stokes' claim in the High Court in Leeds, ruling that the substantial sums provided to Sebastian and his wife, Olivia, were gifts, not loans. Robert Stokes had demanded that his grandson sell his newly refurbished home to repay the money, claiming it was intended as an investment to be 'flipped' for profit.

However, Sebastian Stokes insisted the money was gifted. His legal team suggested that family jealousy over his favored status with his grandfather fueled the dispute. The judge found that the relationship between Robert and Sebastian had been positive at the time the advances were made.

Financial Contributions

The dispute centered on approximately £850,000 provided between 2020 and 2022. Over £720,000 of this amount was allocated towards the purchase of Sebastian and Olivia's six-bedroom home in Dore, Sheffield. Additional funds were used for their wedding at the five-star Grantley Hall in North Yorkshire, including £25,000 paid directly to the venue and over £10,000 for flowers.

Robert Stokes testified that he became suspicious when he learned of extensive refurbishments to the house, believing it contradicted the plan to sell it for profit. He expressed distress and a feeling of being deceived.

Robert's son, Richard (Sebastian's uncle), and Richard's wife, Helen, supported Robert's claim. Helen Stokes had accused Sebastian and Olivia of living a lavish lifestyle at Robert's expense, describing their wedding as excessively expensive for someone earning approximately £40,000 a year in the family business.

The defense maintained that the house was purchased as a family home and that the wedding funds were gifts. Their lawyers suggested that Richard and Helen acted out of vindictiveness and jealousy.

Business Context

Stokes Tiles began as a decorating supplies firm in 1895 and expanded into tile manufacturing and supply under Robert Stokes' leadership. The company now operates from a 100,000 sq ft base in Sheffield. Sebastian had previously left a banking career to join the family business, with his grandfather considering him 'the future' of Stokes Tiles.
