Grand Jury Declines to Indict Cassidy Hutchinson Over Jan. 6 Testimony

The Department of Justice has not secured a grand jury indictment against former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, concluding a federal criminal investigation into her testimony regarding Donald Trump's conduct on January 6, 2021. The probe, which began earlier this year, was initiated by then-Attorney General Pam Bondi shortly before her departure from the agency.

Hutchinson became a key witness for the House January 6 Committee, providing testimony that implicated Trump in the events leading up to and during the Capitol riot. She testified that Trump appeared unconcerned about armed supporters and recounted an alleged incident where Trump lunged at a Secret Service agent in his limousine.

Sources indicated that prosecutors aimed to charge Hutchinson with making false statements. The investigation was overseen by the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, a development noted as significant given the division's evolving mission under Trump's second presidential term and leadership by Harmeet Dhillon. The Daily Mail previously reported on the Justice Department's criminal investigation into Hutchinson.

In March, Congressman Barry Loudermilk, who chairs the House Republicans' January 6 Committee, sent a criminal referral to the DOJ, urging an investigation into Hutchinson. Loudermilk, who served as an aide to Trump's former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, accused Hutchinson of lying to Congress.

Hutchinson herself acknowledged being the target of a federal criminal investigation last month and stated her intention to invoke her Fifth Amendment right if compelled to testify. Trump has denied the incident involving the Secret Service agent, and the driver of the presidential limo has also disputed Hutchinson's account.
