The UK government is set to implement a crackdown on claims management firms that are allegedly exploiting the welfare system and charging exorbitant fees to vulnerable individuals seeking benefits. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden announced that these firms will be banned from charging fees, and a new Code of Practice will be introduced, backed by legislation if necessary.

This initiative comes in response to increasing reports of companies preying on those in need, including pensioners. One case highlighted involved a pensioner who contacted McFadden's department in distress after a benefits claim was made on her behalf without her full understanding, leading her to fear potential repercussions. Another individual felt pressured into a payment plan for a large share of her welfare payment to a firm she had used for assistance.

The Attendance Allowance, a benefit for older individuals needing help with personal care, has seen a fivefold increase in claims managed by these firms in the past year alone. These companies have been reported to charge up to £1,300 per application, significantly diminishing the financial support for claimants.

"It's unacceptable that rogue opportunists are charging people significant fees for support they are entitled to for nothing," McFadden stated. "It's time to hold them to account."

Many individuals are reportedly unaware that free support is available through organizations like Citizens Advice, Independent Age, and various charities. Claims management companies have also been accused of submitting claims with exaggerated care needs without the claimant's knowledge, raising concerns about fraud and the potential consequences for the individuals involved.

To combat this, alongside the ban on fees, the government plans a national awareness campaign. This campaign will include advertisements in newspapers and posters in GP surgeries and pharmacies to inform claimants about the availability of free assistance. The goal is to ensure that nobody seeking help due to illness, disability, or financial difficulty is subjected to undue pressure or financial exploitation.
