Gotham FC Faces NWSL Shield Race Amidst Key Injuries

Gotham FC faces another opportunity to clinch the NWSL Shield this weekend, though they will be without two of their leading scorers, Jaedyn Shaw and Rose Lavelle, who are sidelined with injuries. Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós confirmed on Saturday that Shaw (knee) and Lavelle (neck) will not be available for Sunday's match in Orlando. This latest setback adds to a series of injury concerns for a team vying to add silverware to their regular-season success.

Earlier this month, Gotham also lost defender Bruninha and rookie forward Jordyn Dudley to season-ending injuries. "For us, it's part of the game," Amorós stated Friday. "When there is a problem, you can focus on the problem or find the solution. We always find the solutions." According to Amorós, the team has lost nearly a dozen players over the past seven months, including Esther González, who unexpectedly signed with a Saudi club after her contract was mutually terminated in July.

"An individual doesn’t win the competition, it’s a whole roster, it’s a whole team," Amorós said. "So that’s where we put a lot of effort on, to be honest, is making sure that everyone is ready. So when the time to contribute is there, then… they are ready."

Gotham FC has maintained a position at or near the top of the NWSL standings for most of the season. With two regular-season games remaining, Gotham is in a tight race for the NWSL Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record. Currently, Gotham leads with 55 points, followed closely by the San Diego Wave with 54 points and the Washington Spirit with 52 points.

For Gotham to secure the Shield on Sunday, they must win their match, and the San Diego Wave must lose to Boston Legacy FC, while the Washington Spirit must either draw or lose to the Kansas City Current. Amorós indicated that the team has not extensively discussed the various clinching scenarios. "Obviously, we know that’s a possibility, but that’s not in our hands," he said. "But what is in our hands is to win the game."

The absence of Shaw, who has scored a team-leading 10 goals this season, and Lavelle, with four goals, presents a significant challenge. Gotham's offense has occasionally struggled to convert opportunities, ranking third-to-last in the league with 35 goals. However, the team's defense has been a strong point, conceding a league-low 22 goals this season. "We need to take care of the little details that go around the game and then go and play the game, go and be ourselves," Amorós commented. "That’s always in our DNA."
