Gorilla Poised to Lead Pack Undergoes Medical Check-up at Disney's Animal Kingdom
Bakari, a 21-year-old western lowland gorilla, received a routine health examination as he prepares to take on a leadership role.
A 21-year-old silverback gorilla named Bakari has undergone a routine medical check-up at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida, drawing the attention of onlookers. Bakari arrived at the park in July 2026 and is being positioned to become the next leader of the park's gorilla troop.
The veterinary examination, which occurred on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, involved the primate being sedated for the procedure. Footage released by Disney Parks shows medical staff conducting the check-up, with one veterinarian seen holding Bakari's hand while he was unconscious.
This check-up marks a significant step as Bakari settles into his new environment and prepares to succeed Gino, the troop's previous silverback, who led the group for 30 years.
In conjunction with Bakari's arrival and integration, Disney is also contributing to gorilla conservation efforts. The Disney Conservation Fund is providing $100,000 in new grants to three organizations: the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE) Center, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, and Gorilla Doctors. These funds are intended to support initiatives aimed at protecting gorilla populations and their natural habitats in the wild.
