Online discussions advocating for the repeal of the 19th Amendment, spurred by the recent Lindsay Clancy trial, pose a "definite threat" to the Republican Party, according to Republican women and strategists. These calls, emerging from conservative-identified online accounts, risk alienating female voters from the GOP.
The debate intensified after Clancy's murder trial concluded in a mistrial, with a majority of jurors leaning towards a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Clancy admitted to killing her three children, but her defense argued she was not criminally responsible due to postpartum psychosis.
Following the trial, social media posts surfaced, with some users suggesting the outcome demonstrated a need to repeal women's right to vote. One user on X stated, "Convict Clancy. Also Repeal the 19th Amendment!" Another post read, "The female jurors in the Lindsay Clancy trial are speaking out about their deliberations and disagreements with the sole male holdout. The more they speak the better they make the case for repealing the 19th Amendment."
Mehek Cooke, a political and legal strategist, cautioned that such rhetoric, largely originating from fringe activists online, is detrimental. "When you have these fringe activists online talking about repealing the 19th Amendment or alienating women, it really doesn’t help," Cooke said. She emphasized that these online sentiments do not reflect the views of mainstream Republicans.
The controversy also follows demonstrations outside a Massachusetts courthouse where mostly female supporters rallied behind Clancy, arguing the case highlighted a lack of understanding of postpartum depression. However, these demonstrations were met with criticism online, with some viewing the support for Clancy as grounds to question women's suffrage.
One X user wrote, "This Lindsay Clancy trial has shown us How spiteful women can be, the fact that women are willing to even defend a child killer just because they want to be ok with the "sisterhood" should alarm you." The post continued, "They will gaslight you, they will use sign language against you and even try to call you all sort of names. But guess what, they are still wrong and they know it. Repeal the 19th."
Tiffany Losee, director of fundraising for The Conservative Caucus, suggested that Democrats are exploiting these fringe ideas to associate them with the broader Republican Party. "You have to understand this is all a game to the Democrat Party," Losee stated. "They’re going to push out anything that looks fringe on the right."
Losee also claimed Democrats use such rhetoric to distract from what she described as the rise of socialism within the Democratic Party. "They're gonna push out crazy, Lindsay Clancy ideas, or ‘look over here at something shiny, or communism is cool, socialism is cool, everything's free,'" Losee said. "But then they will not take that extra step to educate the voter on what exactly they are pushing."
Cooke countered that the left has alienated women and that it is the Republican Party's responsibility to engage them by presenting "common sense."
