GOP Senator Calls for Probe Into Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden's Foreign Dealings

Sen. John Curtis, R-Utah, is calling for the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, citing concerns over alleged corruption and foreign business dealings leveraging their fathers' presidential status. Curtis has formally requested that the committee, led by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, subpoena both individuals to testify.

In a letter to Grassley, Curtis argued that significant questions have arisen regarding presidential family members using their fathers' influence for business gain. "A toaster is a wedding gift," Curtis stated on X, referencing his letter. "A private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch is something else. Republicans nearly wore out the subpoena machine investigating Hunter Biden’s foreign relationships. We should not unplug it now. 'Trust us' was not enough then, and it is not enough now."

Curtis pointed to reports of Trump Jr.'s lavish after-party following his wedding, which was allegedly funded by a Russian oligarch with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This event, first reported by ProPublica, involved an oligarch linked to Gazprom, a Russian state-owned energy company. Trump Jr. has also been involved in promoting cryptocurrency ventures and pursuing international real estate deals, including meetings with foreign heads of state, according to Curtis.

The Utah senator further noted Trump Jr.'s financial and advisory ties to prediction market platforms that rely on federal regulatory decisions from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. These activities, coupled with his father's increasing income from ventures including crypto, which are reportedly managed by his sons, raise concerns, Curtis wrote.

Curtis contended that the investigations should not be partisan and that the public's belief in government corruption necessitates action. "The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president," he wrote. "Nor should congressional oversight begin and end when control of the White House changes hands."

Curtis drew parallels to the extensive Republican probes into Hunter Biden's business dealings and his father, President Joe Biden. While acknowledging Biden's denial of involvement in his son's business, Curtis asserted that his father's presidency "opened doors that otherwise may have remained closed." He extended this logic to Trump Jr., stating that such relationships can create actual or perceived expectations of favorable treatment, potentially posing national security vulnerabilities.
