Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) stated on Wednesday that Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, should be imprisoned for his role in the nation's COVID-19 pandemic response. Tuberville made these remarks on Newsmax, claiming that Fauci "lied through his teeth" regarding the origins of COVID-19.

Tuberville's comments came the same day Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right and refused to answer questions during a hearing. Fauci had been subpoenaed by Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who has had a contentious relationship with the former infectious disease expert. Fauci stated that Paul's "unhinged obsession" with imprisoning him was the reason for invoking the Fifth Amendment, suggesting the senator's sole aim was to elicit a statement that would justify his calls for Fauci to be "behind bars."

There is currently no evidence to support Tuberville's claims that Fauci lied to Congress or covered up information about the virus's origins. Fauci has consistently denied these allegations. Health experts, including Fauci and the World Health Organization, have largely maintained that COVID-19 most likely originated from an animal-to-human transmission, though a lab-leak theory also exists.

During the interview, Tuberville also called Fauci a "fool" and suggested that people are still dying due to COVID-19 vaccines, accusing Fauci of using Americans as "guinea pigs." Data from the National Library of Medicine indicates that deaths directly linked to COVID-19 vaccines are rare.

Tuberville also commented on a preemptive pardon issued to Fauci by President Biden. Appearing on SiriusXM's "David Webb Show," Tuberville argued that this federal pardon does not shield Fauci from potential lawsuits at the state level in Alabama, where Tuberville is running for governor.
