Republican Senate hopeful Michele Tafoya has voiced concerns that Minnesotans "feel under a level of threat" following the FBI's arrest of an 18-year-old accused of plotting an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at the Mall of America. Tafoya, who is campaigning for an open Senate seat in the upcoming midterm elections, praised law enforcement for thwarting the potential attack but used the incident to draw a stark contrast in the upcoming election.

"This November, the choice is clear: law and order or more of the same. Common sense or chaos," Tafoya stated in an X post, thanking the FBI and local law enforcement. She later elaborated in an interview with Fox News Digital, noting that concerns about crime are prevalent on the campaign trail.

Authorities said Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud was arrested after purchasing an AK-47-style rifle, magazines, and ammunition from an undercover FBI employee. According to an FBI agent's sworn complaint, Mohamud had been under investigation for nearly two years and repeatedly expressed intent in chat messages to an informant to attack and kill non-Muslims at the Mall of America on Oct. 24, the date of a scheduled Hmong arts celebration.

U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen stated at a news conference that agents were able to detect and disrupt the threat before the suspect could carry out his intention to kill an estimated 30 to 60 people. Mohamud, described as a "radicalized young man," is of Somali descent. Tafoya also referenced a recent increase in gang-related gun violence in Minnesota, which some local law enforcement officials have linked to members of the Somali American community.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Tafoya's opponent, also released a statement on X, expressing relief that the "horrific attack on Minnesota was prevented" and gratitude for law enforcement's actions.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., also commended law enforcement's work in preventing the attack, emphasizing the need for continued investments in counter-terrorism and local policing to prevent similar incidents. She stated that the state must confront terrorism and violent crime by working with federal and local law enforcement agencies.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth also praised the efforts of federal and local law enforcement in stopping the "potentially catastrophic ISIS-inspired terrorist plot," expressing concern that a young person could be led down such a path.
