A dispute over a veterans benefits bill on Thursday led to a public confrontation between Republican lawmakers in a closed-door House meeting, prompting intervention from Speaker Mike Johnson.

The conflict arose after a procedural vote on the House floor where Republicans, in a rare alignment with Democrats, voted down a bill championed by Rep. Zach Nunn, a combat-injured Air Force veteran. The bill aimed to revise medical benefits for injured veterans, but disagreements surfaced regarding its language and funding.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who also has military service experience, joined three other Republicans in opposing the measure, citing concerns that it would cut some existing benefits to fund new ones. According to sources familiar with the meeting, Nunn became agitated with Luna after she entered the discussion. One source described Nunn as having "lost his s**t" on Luna.

Luna reportedly left the meeting abruptly following Nunn's outburst. Luna stated that she was asked by Speaker Johnson to join the discussion to address concerns and move the bill forward. She later told the Daily Mail that Nunn's conduct was unprofessional and compared it to behavior that would lead to termination in the workplace.

Supporters of the bill maintain that the legislation's changes to disability ratings for tinnitus and sleep apnea cases are misrepresented and are intended to create savings that would fund the expanded benefits. However, Luna believes alternative funding sources should be found to avoid accusations of cutting veteran benefits.

Representatives for Nunn's office and Speaker Johnson's office did not respond to requests for comment. Many House Republicans have privately expressed frustration with Luna's approach to intra-party disagreements, noting her prominent presence on social media.
