GOP Congresswoman Slams Trump's Immigration Crackdown, Citing Betrayal of Hispanic Supporters

Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a Florida Republican facing re-election in November, has released an advertisement criticizing President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts, a stance that departs from Trump's endorsement of her campaign earlier this year. The ad marks a significant public break with the former president, who had previously lauded Salazar's work and given her his "Complete and Total Endorsement."

"Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far," Salazar stated in the ad. "The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today." She added, "I’m not talking about giving them amnesty. I’m talking about giving them a dignified life in this promised land. And only you can do that."

Salazar’s campaign has indicated that this advertisement is the first in a series planned before the midterm elections. She is currently in a race against Democratic nominee Eliott Rodríguez, who, like Salazar, is of Cuban American heritage and formerly worked as a journalist. The Cook Political Report rates Salazar's district, Florida's 27th Congressional District, as "Likely Republican," suggesting she is expected to retain her seat. This district has a notable foreign-born population, comprising over 54% of its total residents.

This is not the first time Salazar has voiced concerns regarding the administration's immigration policies. Earlier in the week, she commented on the detention of Luis Galeano, an exiled Nicaraguan journalist whose asylum application has been pending. Salazar stated on social media, "America must always know the difference between a criminal and a political exile. Luis is a respected journalist who paid a price for telling the truth about the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship. The regime persecuted him, forced him into exile, and stripped him of his citizenship." She urged the administration to "enforce the law and deport dangerous individuals, but do not treat political exiles like criminals."

Salazar has also supported bipartisan legislative efforts in the House aimed at providing a path to legal status for immigrants without criminal records, though not a pathway to citizenship. Her recent statements place her among a growing number of Republicans who have publicly expressed dissent regarding Trump's policies, a group that has sometimes drawn criticism and primary challenges from the former president.
