GOP AG Hopeful Accuses James of Ignoring Homeless Shelter Fraud

Republican candidate for New York attorney general, Saritha Komatireddy, has sharply criticized incumbent Democrat Letitia James, alleging that James has neglected to address widespread fraud and corruption within the state's homeless shelter system. Komatireddy asserted that the system is failing, leading to the deaths of vulnerable individuals and questioning the allocation of significant public funds.

"Nearly 20 New Yorkers died in the winter, freezing to death on the streets because they were homeless," Komatireddy stated outside City Hall. "That is a sign of a failing system. In one of the richest places in the world we have people dying on the streets. It’s unconscionable."

Komatireddy highlighted the substantial cost associated with the homeless population, stating, "We spend $81,000 per homeless person in New York. You could give a guy $81,000 and he wouldn’t be homeless tomorrow. Where is that money going?"

The challenger directly accused Attorney General James of failing to investigate the shelter system despite numerous reports and investigations highlighting issues. "The New York State Comptroller, the New York City Comptroller, the Department of Health, the Inspector General, have all conducted investigations," Komatireddy said. "They have identified concrete instances of fraud, of corruption, of kickbacks. Our homeless shelter industry is just that."

Komatireddy further claimed, "Attorney General James has ignored those calls. She has completely failed to supervise the homeless shelters in the state, even though it is her responsibility."

Concerns about fraud within the shelter system have been previously documented. In 2024, the New York Department of Investigation flagged the entire shelter system's $4 billion budget as susceptible to fraud and corruption. This follows a 2021 incident where Victor Rivera, the former CEO of the city's largest shelter operator, pleaded guilty to bribery and kickback schemes. Additionally, in 2023, then-Councilman Robert Holden raised concerns about $1.7 billion in contracts awarded to a firm employing the sister of a former Homeless Service Administrator head.

Komatireddy stated that homeless shelters are required to file annual financial reports with the attorney general's office and undergo review for significant asset transactions. She contended that James has not utilized this authority, effectively giving shelters a "blank check."

"It’s an industry where people make millions of dollars for themselves and leave the homeless abandoned on the streets," Komatireddy said. "The people who are paying the price [are] the innocent, homeless New Yorkers of New York, who are dying on the streets."

Komatireddy vowed to prioritize auditing and investigating homeless shelters immediately upon taking office, promising to reform the industry and ensure aid reaches those in need. "If nothing changes, if our attorney general doesn’t change, if we keep everything the same, 20 more will die next January," she warned.

In response, a spokesperson for Attorney General James criticized Komatireddy, linking her to former President Donald Trump and his administration's proposed funding cuts to shelters. "Ms. Komatireddy should first ask her biggest endorser, Donald Trump, why he attempted to cut billions of dollars of funding for shelters, which would have left thousands of New Yorkers on the streets," the spokesperson stated. "Thanks to the work of Attorney General James, that funding was protected, because all New Yorkers should live with dignity."

Recent polling from Siena College indicates James leads Komatireddy 54% to 39% in New York. Election Day is November 3, with early voting already underway.
