Republicans have demanded that television stations stop airing a political advertisement that praises U.S. Representative Tom Suozzi for expanding state and local tax (SALT) deductions. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) alleges the ad falsely represents Suozzi's voting record, asserting he voted against the "One Big Beautiful Bill" which included the SALT deduction expansion.

The advertisement, paid for by the Super PAC Effective Governing Coalition, features a man identified as "Bob the Baker" praising Suozzi for increasing the federal SALT deduction from $10,000 to $40,000 for households earning under $500,000. The ad states, "When Washington politicians raised our taxes by taking away our fair share of the state and local tax deduction, Suozzi said, ‘No way.'" It further claims, "Suozzi fought like hell to lower our taxes and increased the SALT deduction, meaning more money back in our pockets."

The NRCC contends that Suozzi rejected federal spending bill H.R. 1, which contained the provision to expand SALT deductions. "Tom Suozzi is misleading Long Islanders to believe he fought for a tax break that he voted against, not once, but twice," said NRCC Spokeswoman Maureen O'Toole. "If he has to rewrite his record to win reelection, it's because he knows voters don’t like the real one."

The NRCC sent a letter to cable networks Spectrum and Optimum requesting the immediate removal of the ad, citing its "false information." NRCC attorney Ryan Dollar wrote in the letter that the advertisement "features a small business owner falsely misrepresenting Rep. Suozzi’s voting record on reducing federal taxes for New York voters in the budget bill, H.R. 1 – which despite what the ad says, Rep. Suozzi categorically did not support."

The SALT deduction cap of $10,000, established in 2017 during the Trump administration, has been a contentious issue for homeowners in areas with high property taxes, such as Long Island. Suozzi, who represents the Third Congressional District in New York, faces a rematch against former Republican state Assemblyman Michael LiPetri in the upcoming election. He had previously defended his vote against the spending bill, stating that while he supported some provisions like the SALT expansion, he opposed other aspects such as tax cuts for the wealthy and reductions in Medicaid spending.

A source close to Suozzi claimed that the congressman has consistently advocated for eliminating the SALT cap. According to this source, Republicans incorporated Suozzi's efforts on SALT into their own plan, even though it did not go as far as Suozzi would have preferred.
