Google Maps Blunder Diverts Drivers Onto Single-Track Road, Causing Traffic Chaos

A technical issue with Google Maps led to significant traffic disruption after drivers were incorrectly diverted from the A9, a major trunk road in Scotland, onto a single-track country lane. The navigation app had falsely indicated that the A9 was closed between Dunkeld and Pitlochry, prompting it to recommend an alternative route.

This inaccurate advice directed motorists onto the U163, an unclassified road not equipped to handle a large volume of traffic. The narrow lane, designed to serve a few small villages, quickly became overwhelmed, causing traffic jams in the Perthshire villages of Ballinluig, Tulliemet, and Guay. Journeys that typically take minutes were extended to nearly an hour as vehicles, including campervans, a coach, and cars towing trailers, attempted to navigate the confined route.

Traffic Scotland issued a statement on social media urging drivers to disregard their navigation systems and remain on the A9, clarifying that while roadworks were present, the main route remained open. A spokesperson for Google acknowledged the issue, stating, "We’ve investigated a technical issue that temporarily showed inaccurate road closures on the map. We have since removed them."

Google Maps utilizes complex algorithms and analyzes anonymized location and speed data from users' phones, alongside information on roadworks and closures, to determine the fastest routes and help drivers avoid delays. However, in this instance, the system's error caused significant inconvenience and traffic congestion.
