Google Maps Adds Fuel Prices to Aid Drivers Amid Soaring Costs

Drivers in the UK can now view live fuel prices at petrol stations directly on Google Maps, a feature the government has called a 'game-changer' amidst sharply rising fuel costs. This update allows users to search for nearby forecourts and see the prices for both petrol and diesel, aiming to provide greater transparency and help households save money.

According to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the added transparency could lead to annual savings of around £40 per household. The initiative comes as the price of diesel reached a new record of 200.11 pence per litre on Wednesday, surpassing previous highs set in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Petrol prices were recorded at 174.89 pence per litre on the same day. The cost of filling a vehicle has also crossed the £10 per gallon mark at numerous forecourts.

The new functionality is expected to increase pressure on the Labour party regarding its plans for a Fuel Duty increase. Minister for energy consumers, Polly Billington, stated that tackling the affordability crisis is a primary responsibility, and that accessing the cheapest fuel should be straightforward. "It is a game-changer for near real-time fuel prices to be shown on Google Maps for the first time in the UK, helping drivers find the best deal and save money at the pump," Billington said.

Petrol stations in the UK have been required to report their pump prices within 30 minutes of any change since February. This data is accessible through the government-run Fuel Finder database, enabling third-party apps and websites, including Google Maps, to utilize it. Sarah-Jayne Williams, director of global product partnerships for Geo at Google, noted that the integration aims to reduce stress for drivers navigating rising costs, providing visibility on pump prices to help budgets extend further.

The new feature will give drivers insights into prices before they go and fill up at a nearby station

The surge in diesel prices is attributed to global supply disruptions stemming from the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as renewed hostilities in the Middle East. Russian diesel exports have decreased following Ukrainian attacks on its oil refineries, increasing demand for fuel from other exporting nations and driving up wholesale prices. Additionally, ongoing tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz continue to affect the global trade of refined oil products.

Edmund King, president of the AA, described the move as a "massive step forward," predicting that most drivers will now have convenient access to fuel price information. He expressed hope that this enhanced transparency would encourage more competitive pricing among retailers and make it easier for drivers to identify stations offering lower prices.

A recent poll indicated that over half of UK drivers are reducing their journeys due to high fuel costs, with six in ten reporting driving significantly less. The survey of nearly 10,000 people by Petrol Prices website also revealed that nearly 90% support freezing or reducing Fuel Duty, which is scheduled to increase in the new year. Current plans include a 3p per litre rise on January 1, followed by an additional 2p increase on March 1, with further adjustments and the end of a 16-year freeze on the levy planned for April. These increases, combined with VAT, could add approximately 7.2 pence per litre to the cost of petrol, amounting to nearly £4 for a full tank of a family car.
