Goodwood Revival Celebrates Vintage Fashion and Motorsport
Thousands of attendees embraced fashion from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s at the annual Goodwood Revival event.
Thousands of vintage enthusiasts gathered at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in Chichester, England, for the annual Goodwood Revival. The three-day festival, which celebrates classic cars and fashion from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, saw attendees don elaborate period costumes.
The event kicked off on a cloudy September afternoon, with racegoers showcasing a range of ensembles, from leather jackets to polka-dot dresses, reflecting the fashion of bygone eras. The festival this year themed its celebration around "La Dolce Vita," featuring a track parade of over 300 Vespas and vintage scooters, and marking Maserati's racing centenary.
A notable highlight of the Revival is the Settrington Cup, a race for children aged four to 10 competing in Austin J40 pedal cars. Children were also seen sporting fetching racing suits and flat caps as they participated in miniature car races.
Many attendees embraced the whimsical spirit of the event. Some styled themselves in coordinated off-shoulder dresses and heart-shaped sunglasses, while others were seen in fur coats and using long cigarette holders, reminiscent of styles from the 1920s and re-popularized in the 1960s and 70s.
The Goodwood Revival, launched in 1998, has maintained its core focus on wheel-to-wheel racing in classic cars within an atmosphere that recreates the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. According to the Goodwood website, the event aims to celebrate a time when clothing, cars, and belongings were cherished for their longevity.
The Goodwood Motor Circuit originally staged races between 1948 and 1966, including the Tourist Trophy and the Glover Trophy. Established by Freddie March, the 9th Duke of Richmond, the circuit was later revived in 1998 by his grandson, Charles, the Earl of March. During the Revival, modern vehicles are prohibited on the circuit, and pre-1966 aircraft are also featured.
The festival has been described as a "magical step back in time to the romance and glamour of motor racing as it used to be in Goodwood's heyday."
