Goodell: NFL Accountability Extends to Owners Like York

San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has returned to NFL business following a six-game suspension, a disciplinary action Commissioner Roger Goodell said highlights the league's commitment to holding all individuals accountable.

Goodell addressed the process surrounding York's punishment and the reach of the NFL's personal conduct policy, which he emphasized extends beyond players to include owners and the commissioner himself. York, who was arrested on prostitution charges in Ohio, declined to comment as he left the NFL owners meetings on Wednesday.

"We went through a full process to understand the facts and the issues. We looked at it under the context of our personal conduct policy, which as you point out, applies to owners, commissioners and everybody else, players," Goodell stated. "And it’s something that we feel strongly about."

York's return signifies the conclusion of his suspension, allowing him to represent the 49ers in league matters. Goodell's remarks underscored that accountability within the league is a universal standard, not confined to players.

"I think we need to represent ourselves and our organizations properly. We saw a violation; we’ve dealt with it from a discipline standpoint. That’s concluded," Goodell said. "So he’ll be back representing the 49ers."

The commissioner stressed that while penalties may vary, no individual is exempt from the disciplinary process due to their position within the league. York's situation, he indicated, reinforces the NFL's stance on upholding its standards across all levels of the organization.
