Professional golfers Michael Kim and Si Woo Kim experienced an unplanned international journey when a Google Maps error led them across the U.S.-Canada border while attempting to find a Korean barbecue restaurant in Detroit. The incident, revealed by Michael Kim on social media, involved a confusing mix-up with a restaurant of the same name located in Canada.
According to Michael Kim's account, Si Woo Kim was tasked with navigating to a specific Korean barbecue establishment. Without a passport and only carrying his wallet, Si Woo Kim followed the mapping application, which directed him toward the border. He realized the mistake as he was about to cross into Canada but found himself on a one-way road with no immediate way to turn back.
At the U.S. border gate, Si Woo Kim explained the accidental border crossing to an officer, who instructed him to proceed into Canada and speak with officers on the other side. However, the detour led them to join a 45-minute line to enter Canada. Once across, they attempted to re-enter the United States.
Upon reaching the U.S. border to return, Si Woo Kim's explanation to the officers became more complicated. What began as an interaction with one officer escalated, with a total of eight officers eventually surrounding their vehicle. The golfers were questioned about weapons and drugs, and their car was searched before they were permitted to proceed back into the United States.
The golfers eventually reached their intended Korean barbecue restaurant approximately 90 minutes later than planned. Si Woo Kim later humorously acknowledged the situation on Instagram, posting, "Made it back safely with out passport."
