Golfer Banned for Five Years After Admitting Cheating

Craig Surgeon, a golfer who has represented the Lothian region, has been suspended for five years from Lothians Golf Association (LGA) events after admitting to cheating during a qualifying round for the LGA amateur championship in July. The ban includes three suspended years, with the full five-year penalty to be invoked if he violates LGA rules before 2031.

The incident occurred at the 18th hole of the Turnhouse course in Edinburgh, where Surgeon dropped a ball and claimed it was a provisional shot from the tee. This maneuver would have allowed him to avoid a difficult tee shot and gain an advantage over his opponents.

Fellow competitors observed Surgeon's actions. Upon completion of the match, he confessed to the wrongdoing and disqualified himself. He later posted a public apology on social media, stating, "It was me. I DQ’d myself and I have owned up and am facing the consequences." He added, "Again to everyone I am sorry and it’s something I’ve got to live with moving forward."

David Doig, secretary of the LGA, described the event as unprecedented for the association, which oversees 68 clubs in the Edinburgh area. "The player admitted his error. We feel that it’s our duty to uphold the rules of the game and the integrity of the game so we took a decision to impose the suspension on the basis of that," Doig stated.

The LGA confirmed the investigation's conclusion, noting that the suspension was issued based on the available information and the player's admission. Amateur golf tournaments typically rely on players to self-report rule violations, with self-disqualification being the minimum expected action. In contrast, higher levels of golf employ video reviews and shot-tracking technology.
