Golden Retriever Offers Toys to Intruder During San Diego Home Break-In
Nash, a 90-pound golden retriever, seemed more interested in playing than guarding when a stranger entered his family's home.
A family's golden retriever named Nash displayed an unusual reaction to an alleged home intruder in San Diego, repeatedly offering toys to the stranger instead of barking or showing aggression. The incident occurred earlier this month in the Sherman Heights neighborhood.
The homeowner, Dante Rowley, and his family were able to monitor the situation remotely through their home security app. According to reports, the intruder gained entry by using a ladder to reach an open second-story window. Once inside, the individual reportedly removed their shoes and shirt, consumed food from the refrigerator, and took a nap.
Nash, a 4-year-old golden retriever, was one of two family dogs present during the approximately 30-minute ordeal. Video footage from the security system shows Nash approaching the intruder multiple times with a toy in his mouth, seemingly inviting the person to play.
The unusual encounter quickly gained attention on social media, with viewers commenting on the blend of fear and amusement the situation evoked. Even when police arrived at the scene, Nash reportedly greeted the officers with a toy, ready to play.
The intruder attempted to flee through a bathroom window but was apprehended by officers waiting in the backyard. The suspect has been charged with burglary and faces additional charges related to unrelated incidents.
Rowley expressed a desire for the individual to receive help. While Nash may not be the ideal candidate for home security, his actions provided a lighthearted, albeit strange, turn of events during the home invasion.
