Gloucester Rugby is undergoing a comprehensive transformation as the club aims to compete for the Premiership Rugby title. This summer has seen the departure of 13 players and the arrival of notable figures such as former Wales captains Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake, South Africa World Cup winner Jean Kleyn, and scrum-half Dan Robson. The club has also bolstered its coaching staff with the additions of Brett Deacon and Joel Tomkins as assistant coaches.

Lewis Ludlow, a long-serving flanker for Gloucester, stated that "radical change around the place" is necessary for the club to achieve its goal of winning the Premiership, a feat it has never accomplished. The changes extend beyond player and staff recruitment, with a deliberate effort to reconnect the current squad with the club's history and the city of Gloucester.

Reimagining Pre-Season Preparation

The club has abandoned its infamous pre-season 'milk challenge,' a tradition where new players had to drink eight pints of milk in 20 minutes without becoming sick, often resulting in head-shaving rituals. Instead, the focus has shifted to presentations and acting performances designed to immerse players in the heritage of the club and the city. A new pre-season fitness challenge was also introduced, taking place in the club's iconic Shed stand.

Head coach George Skivington, who joined in 2020, expressed his improved understanding of Gloucester and reiterated the club's ambition to win the Premiership. "This club has never done it, but it's built on a great foundation. We want to re-embrace that," Skivington said. He noted that players undertook projects on former players, past seasons, and the history of Kingsholm, with some presenting to former players at a barbecue.

Last season was described as transitional for Gloucester, who finished eighth in the Premiership. Skivington acknowledged the need to strengthen the squad, particularly in areas requiring senior leadership, and to improve the backroom staff. The club has made significant investments both on and off the field.

Squad Strengthened for New Season

While the departure of scrum-half Tomos Williams to Saracens is a notable loss, the overall squad composition is viewed as stronger than the previous year. The influx of players like Morgan, Lake, and Kleyn is expected to provide more power and grit to the forward pack.

Ludlow, who is preparing for his 14th season with the club and aims to surpass the all-time appearance record, highlighted the importance of rugby to the city and the connection with former players. "You could see how much them being back at the club meant to them. There was a lot of emotion. It was nice to see," he commented.

Ambitions and Expectations

There is a palpable sense of excitement and expectation surrounding Gloucester for the upcoming season. Fly-half Charlie Atkinson stated, "We're all aiming for top four. There is a big sense of excitement around the club." He believes the team has the potential for a higher finish than last year, recalling close matches against eventual strong performers like Bath and Northampton.

Skivington aims for Gloucester to regain a formidable edge and make Kingsholm a fortress. The pre-season fitness challenge, which involved paired runs and equipment carrying across the Shed stand, was part of this effort. Dan Robson and James Venter were the winners of this challenge.

Ludlow identified Northampton, the recent Premiership champions, as a benchmark, particularly praising their defense. "That's an area we know we need to change and improve on. We have to go back to being a proper Gloucester forward pack," he said. With the new signings and a renewed focus on physicality, Gloucester is poised to challenge at the top end of the Premiership, with the expectation that they will deliver strong performances this season.
