Gloucester Centers Will Joseph and Seb Atkinson Target England Partnership
The in-form Premiership duo, likened to international stars, discuss their on-field chemistry and the team's surprising success.
Gloucester's burgeoning centre partnership of Will Joseph and Seb Atkinson, who have drawn comparisons to top international talents, are setting their sights on forming a formidable pairing for England. The duo have been instrumental in Gloucester's unexpected rise to the top of the Gallagher Premiership table after three rounds.
Joseph, the younger brother of former England international Jonathan Joseph, has been lauded for his explosive attacking play. He represented England at the Under-20 level and made his senior debut at 19, an experience he described as having “nothing to lose.” His older brother won 54 caps for England between 2012 and 2020, including a Grand Slam in the 2016 Six Nations.
Atkinson, meanwhile, occupies England's No. 12 shirt and has earned an enhanced EPS contract from the Rugby Football Union. He brings a physical presence to the Gloucester backline that complements Joseph's dynamic style.
Their on-field understanding has been a key factor in Gloucester's flying start to the season. Atkinson noted the positive atmosphere within the squad, stating, “The vibe’s good. We knew we had an opportunity to play some good rugby but we thought that in previous years. There’s a belief that we can still get a lot better.”
Gloucester's success has been built on significant recruitment and a cohesive team effort. Major additions to their pack this summer included Dewi Lake, Jean Kleyn, and Jac Morgan. The club, along with Bristol, remains one of only two current Premiership teams never to have lifted the title, adding further motivation to their current campaign. Positivity is running high as the team prepares to host back-to-back European champions Bordeaux in their Champions Cup opener.
