Nations are struggling to meet a critical global target to protect at least 30% of the world's land and seas by 2030, raising concerns as the 17th meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) convenes. This smaller gathering, preceding the larger Conference of the Parties 31 (COP31), focuses on assessing progress toward this ambitious conservation goal.
With less than three years remaining to achieve the 30x30 target, the world is demonstrably falling short. Brian O'Donnell, Director of Campaign for Nature, will address the successes and ongoing challenges in meeting this pledge. His insights will highlight the work needed to accelerate efforts and ensure the target is met.
In parallel, the program will revisit the work of an overlooked scientist who first identified carbon dioxide's heat-trapping capabilities. The broadcast will also feature mathematician Kit Yates, who will provide an update on significant science news from the past week.
