Glenn Close Reveals Hip Replacement Surgery

Actress Glenn Close, 79, revealed Tuesday that she recently underwent a complete hip replacement. The announcement came after she was observed using a cane at a red carpet event last week, prompting concern from fans and media.

Close took to Instagram to explain the situation, stating that her doctors determined her "left hip was in really bad shape," necessitating the surgery. She shared the update in a video clip, thanking her followers for their support and offering clarification for her use of a cane.

"I have a cane because I have had a complete hip replacement," Close said in the video. She indicated that she is using the cane as a temporary measure while she focuses on recovery, especially given her upcoming professional commitments.

Her schedule includes attending a premiere for "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping" in London and a New York City premiere for the second season of "All's Fair." Close expressed her desire to be "fully present" for these events, though she anticipates her mobility may be limited.

"My whole thing right now is to keep myself in running order, so that I can really leap into whatever challenges come my way... so I'm hobbling around on a cane for now," she added. Close also mentioned her hope to return to her usual self, stating, "I look forward to all the adventures coming, so love to everyone."

Close also humorously noted she was wearing "Frownies," facial patches designed to smooth wrinkles, adding "Frownies help." She captioned the social media post, "A needed explanation. Love to all."

The "Fatal Attraction" star was recently seen at a screening of the film "La Bola Negra" at New York City's SVA Theater, where she used a cane. In "La Bola Negra," Close portrayed Isabelle Durand, a role for which the film's directors, Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, received the Best Director award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.

In addition to her current projects, Close, an eight-time Academy Award nominee, is scheduled to receive an honorary Oscar on November 15 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom Ovation in Hollywood. In August, she shared an Instagram post from her home in Montana, where she has resided since 2019, expressing a sense of peace and gratitude while observing the sunset.
