Glass House in Berkeley Hills Becomes Most Viewed U.S. Listing

A Berkeley, California home with a striking two-story glass wall has rapidly become the most-viewed real estate listing in the United States, drawing significant online attention since hitting the market.

The property at 141 Fairlawn Drive, listed for $1.08 million on September 23, recorded nearly 12,000 views and over 1,000 saves on Redfin within its first four days. The 1,625-square-foot residence, designed in 1972 by architect Andrew Batey, features expansive walls of glass that offer views of the surrounding natural landscape.

Listing agent Elizabeth Lee of eXp Realty stated that the property's high visibility is intentional, with multiple open houses scheduled to accommodate the surge in interest. "There’s a reason why — because I’m having two open houses and I’m having a twilight party Thursday," Lee told The Post.

The home's architecture, characterized by a prominent two-story glass facade, exposed structural beams, an open-tread staircase, and a mezzanine-style upper level, has drawn comparisons to a modernist art installation. The design emphasizes a connection with the environment, integrating the interior with the leafy hillside setting.

Originally designed for architectural photographer Henry Bowles, the house incorporates elements such as sliding glass doors opening onto a deck and a multi-level floor plan that follows the contours of the slope. The property includes a master suite exceeding 400 square feet, featuring a black-tiled bathroom and skylights. A separate studio space, formerly Bowles' darkroom, offers approximately 300 square feet with its own bathroom and skylight, suitable for use as an office or guest quarters.

Records indicate the house has a history of strong buyer interest. The current owner purchased it for $725,000 in 2004, exceeding the asking price at the time. Prior sales include $358,000 in 1988 and $210,000 in 1981. This marks the first time the property has been listed for sale in over two decades.
