Glasgow City Council Reaches Pay Agreement with Unison Union

Glasgow City Council and the Unison union have reached an agreement to resolve a pay and grading dispute, according to council leader Ricky Bell. The deal, which will be put to union members in a ballot later this month, aims to end pay discrimination within the local authority and avoids the "unpalatable prospect of fire and rehire."

Bell stated that the agreement is "strong and fair" and confirmed that the GMB and Unite unions have also agreed to present the deal to their respective memberships. "With all three unions now engaging with their memberships, we are moving closer to the outcome we have always wanted to achieve: ending pay discrimination in Glasgow City Council once and for all," Bell said.

He attributed the breakthrough to "additional support from the Scottish government," which he said "helped unlock this agreement." Bell also expressed gratitude for the unions' engagement throughout the process. "While there is no further money to come as part of this package, I look forward to the outcome of the ballots in the coming weeks," he added.

The council leader emphasized that the goal has always been to establish a "fair, sustainable pay and grading system that works for employees and protects vital public services." He concluded by stating that the council is "now closer than ever to achieving that."
