Glasgow Central Station and a portion of Union Street will fully reopen next week, marking the end of a 19-week closure period following a major fire in March. The blaze, which began in a vape shop, spread through the historic Victorian building, leading to structural damage and necessitating extensive stabilization work.
Union Street is scheduled to reopen in its entirety on Friday, July 17, at 1 p.m., according to Glasgow City Council. Network Rail Scotland announced that the station's main concourse will be accessible again on July 13. The entrances along Union Street and Gordon Street will also reopen by the end of that week.
Liam Sumpter, managing director at Network Rail Scotland, described the reopening of the Union Street and Gordon Street entrances as a significant milestone, enabling the station to operate fully for passengers. He credited the tireless efforts of the teams over the past months for preparing the station for its return to normal operations and extended thanks to passengers, retailers, and railway colleagues for their patience and support. Sumpter also noted the positive timing of the reopening, coinciding with preparations to welcome visitors for the Commonwealth Games.
Phil Campbell, ScotRail customer operations director, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the collaborative efforts between Network Rail and industry partners to minimize disruption and ensure clear travel information throughout the recovery process. He thanked customers for their understanding while the essential work was completed.
The fire, which started on Sunday, March 8, significantly impacted the B-listed building. Subsequent demolition work was also undertaken at Union Corner, the site where the fire originated.
