Girl Scouts of the USA is expanding its iconic cookie offerings for the 2027 season to include a treat specifically designed for canine companions. The new product, named Patch Pals, are blueberry muffin-flavored, soft-baked dog biscuits created in partnership with BARK, the company behind BarkBox. These treats will feature one of four "patch" designs, intended to represent various Girl Scout experiences.
Emergency veterinarian Ben Donati expressed initial surprise, followed by enthusiasm, for the new dog-friendly cookies, noting that the move aligns with the growing trend of pet owners viewing their animals as integral family members. "So, probably a light bulb went off in someone’s mind that, why not sell to the four-legged member of the family," Donati told Fox News Digital.
Despite the excitement surrounding the new offering, Donati cautioned pet owners against excessive indulgence. He recommended that treats constitute no more than 10% of a dog's daily diet. While the ingredients in Patch Pals did not raise immediate alarms for Donati, he emphasized that treats should not replace a balanced and complete diet. "Probably shouldn’t eat a whole box of Patch Pals," he advised.
Donati also highlighted the increasing humanization of pets and the potential for owners to unintentionally overfeed their animals due to this close bond. This anthropomorphism can lead to extra calories for dogs, potentially impacting their lifespan and joint health. He noted that one of the most common mistakes owners make is "unintentionally overfeeding them."
For owners of highly food-motivated dogs, Donati suggested incorporating a portion of their regular kibble into training sessions or walks as rewards, rather than solely relying on additional treats. He also pointed out that treat distribution can influence behavior, and owners should be mindful of not inadvertently reinforcing unwanted actions by offering rewards at inappropriate times.
Overall, Donati views the Girl Scouts' venture into dog cookies positively, anticipating that it will add enjoyment for both the young sellers and the purchasing families. Patch Pals are slated to be available starting January 12, 2027.
