Girl, 7, Fatally Stabbed in Chicago; Bystanders Apprehend Suspect
A 7-year-old girl died after being repeatedly stabbed in the back by a woman in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood on Saturday morning.
A 7-year-old girl, identified as Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon, was fatally stabbed multiple times in the back on Saturday morning while walking with her sister in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood. The attack occurred around 11:55 a.m. when an unknown woman approached the two children.
Witnesses told WGN 9 that the assault appeared to be random, with the assailant not knowing the victim. Security footage showed the girl and her older sister holding hands just moments before the incident. Following the stabbing, the alleged attacker, described by police sources as a 48-year-old woman, began to walk away from the scene.
Bystanders rushed to the aid of Edi Mari, while a group of men pursued the attacker. William Smith, who was inside a nearby barbershop, told the outlet that bystanders apprehended the suspect, reportedly using jumper cables.
"He whacked her with it. She fell, he whacked her again. Then they just started dropping the hammers on her," Smith recounted.
Police were alerted and responded to the scene. The suspect was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Edi Mari was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Local residents expressed shock and grief over the violent act. "I just don't know what this world is coming to... for a seven-year-old like that to be getting stabbed," said Denesta Freeman. "I never thought it would come to this point. I never did. These kids nowadays are not getting to live their life."
Alderman Michelle Harris of the 8th Ward issued a statement expressing her sadness and commending the bystanders. "I am deeply saddened by the senseless stabbing of a seven year old child in our neighborhood. My heart goes out to her family, friends, and everyone who is affected by this horrific incident. No child should ever have to experience violence or fear while simply walking down the sidewalk. I also want to recognize and thank the bystanders who quickly intervened - helping to detain the suspect and get assistance on the way. Their quick actions may have prevented further harm. I urge anyone with information to contact the Chicago Police Department. Our community must come together to support the victim and hold the perpetrator accountable."
The Chicago Police Department has not yet identified the suspect and stated that detectives are continuing their investigation into whether the suspect knew the victim. No further updates were available as of Sunday afternoon.
