Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich stated that Iran is attempting to mirror the political warfare tactics of North Vietnam against the United States under President Trump. According to Gingrich, Iran's strategy hinges on eroding American public support for the conflict and leveraging potential Democratic gains in Congress to create political distractions.

Gingrich, speaking on his “Cats Roundtable” radio show, drew parallels between Iran's current approach and North Vietnam's strategy during the Vietnam War. He suggested that Tehran believes it cannot achieve its objectives militarily but can succeed by outlasting the U.S. politically. "The North Vietnamese knew they could never defeat us militarily, but they could defeat us politically," Gingrich said, adding that their aim was to turn the American news media and the political system against the war.

He posited that Iran is betting on Democrats regaining control of Congress in the upcoming elections, anticipating that this would lead to numerous investigations into the Trump administration, thereby diverting presidential attention from military objectives. "Their whole effort was designed to get the American news media to turn against the war, and then to have the American political system break and conclude that it couldn’t sustain [the war]," Gingrich explained.

While polls indicate that the conflict involving Iran is unpopular, Gingrich noted that Trump's approach has primarily involved an air campaign, contrasting it with the full-scale invasion and tens of thousands of casualties experienced during the Vietnam War, which fueled significant anti-war protests in the U.S. Gingrich emphasized that Iran's focus is "on trying to win in America politically what they can’t possibly win militarily."

President Trump has consistently stated that his primary objective in the conflict with Iran is to prevent the nation from acquiring nuclear weapons. In response to U.S. actions, Iran has disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies, which has contributed to rising gas prices. Concerns have also been reported regarding the sufficient supply of munitions for both offensive strikes and defensive measures against Iranian attacks on U.S. assets.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has maintained pressure on Iran through a naval blockade and increasingly stringent sanctions, which have reportedly led to inflation and economic hardship within Iran. Trump has indicated that his administration is engaged in indirect negotiations with Iran while the Pentagon works to increase production of air defense and cruise missiles. During a recent rally, Trump expressed confidence in defeating Iran and suggested the possibility of declaring the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory. He also stated that the temporary increase in gasoline prices is a justifiable cost for preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
