New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin III suffered what appeared to be a significant knee injury during practice on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The incident occurred during a 1-on-1 drill when Austin's knee buckled as he ran an in-cut route, leading to audible groans of pain.
The severity of the injury immediately cast a somber mood over the practice session. All other drills stopped as players and coaches gathered around Austin before he was carted off the field.
Austin, 27, signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Giants in the offseason, a move he reportedly desired to play with quarterback Jaxson Dart and under head coach John Harbaugh. Harbaugh had recently praised Austin's versatility, noting his ability to play all three receiver positions and his reliability in running routes and making catches.
"The nice thing about Calvin is that he can play all three (receiver) spots," Harbaugh said after practice on Monday. "You can move him around in any one of those positions. He’s a ‘smaller receiver,’ and yet he can go outside. He’s played outside a lot. You don’t see that that often. So, he gives us a lot of versatility that way. Kind of everything you ask him to do, he does it well. He’s very reliable. Runs the right routes, makes catches. He’s been that way kind of his whole career."
An experienced returner, Austin was also competing for a spot on the 53-man roster. His potential long-term absence could impact the team's receiver depth, possibly affecting decisions regarding other players like Odell Beckham Jr. While Braxton Berrios is listed as the top option for punt and kickoff returns, Austin's experience in that area adds another layer to his potential value.
