Giants Turn to Jameis Winston as Jaxson Dart Era Ends Abruptly

The New York Giants are entering an unexpected and uncertain phase of their season with veteran quarterback Jameis Winston taking over as the starter. The transition comes after star quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending left knee injury just seven snaps into the second game of his second year.

Dart underwent surgery Friday to repair his meniscus and medial collateral ligament, with an expected recovery period of four to six months. He is anticipated to be ready for the 2027 season, leaving the Giants to navigate the remaining 15 regular-season games without him.

Head coach John Harbaugh acknowledged the team meeting following the confirmation of Dart's injury was "challenging." His focus has shifted from building an offense around Dart to finding a way to win without him, a task he believes the team is embracing. Harbaugh noted that Thursday's practice was "probably our best practice of the season."

The team recently extended Winston, 32, on a two-year, $13 million contract, recognizing him as one of the NFL's top backup quarterbacks. Now, the Giants will rely on his experience as he steps into the starting role, moving from the tangible enthusiasm surrounding Dart to the "tangible uncertainty" of Winston.

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy addressed the potential for turnovers, recalling Winston's 2019 season with the Buccaneers where he threw 30 interceptions alongside 33 touchdown passes. "Respecting that football and ball security is paramount, this type of team that we have," Nagy said. "So, he knows that. He’s as true of a pro as you’ll be around, preparation-wise and how he handles this. So, you just play his game, be who he is, and then we’ve got to help him as a staff, too."

Harbaugh described the offensive approach under Winston as a "lane change as opposed to changing direction," indicating a strategic adjustment rather than a complete overhaul. The Giants aim to utilize Winston's strengths in throwing intermediate and deep passes while mitigating risks.

The Giants, currently 1-1 on the season, will face the Tennessee Titans, who are 0-2, on Sunday. The game is expected to be played in challenging weather conditions due to an approaching nor'easter storm.
