Giants Turn to J.J. McCarthy at Quarterback, Benching Jameis Winston

The New York Giants are making a significant change at the quarterback position, opting to start rookie J.J. McCarthy over Jameis Winston for their Week 7 matchup against the Houston Texans. The decision comes after McCarthy replaced Winston in the previous game against the New Orleans Saints, leading a near comeback.

Winston, who had a 2-1-1 record as the starter, was benched in the third quarter of the 34-27 loss to the Saints. Despite leading a 14-point comeback attempt in an earlier tie against the Commanders, Winston's two second-half interceptions against New Orleans appeared to be a key factor in the coaching staff's decision.

McCarthy entered the game with the Giants trailing 34-10 and sparked the offense, throwing for 243 fourth-quarter yards and orchestrating three scoring drives. Only one other non-starting quarterback in the last 25 years has recorded more fourth-quarter yardage in a single game. McCarthy's final pass on fourth-and-1 from the Saints' 14-yard line fell incomplete with 12 seconds remaining, preventing a potential game-tying or game-winning drive.

Head coach John Harbaugh acknowledged McCarthy's performance under duress. "He did a heck of a job given the circumstances and kind of desperation time," Harbaugh said. "It’s different than normal football, but made some plays and gives us a chance to win the game."

The Giants acquired McCarthy in a trade with the Vikings on September 28 for a fifth-round pick. He brings athleticism to run RPOs and zone-reads, a capability the team lost when Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury.

McCarthy's first start will present a considerable challenge against the Texans, who boast a strong pass rush tied for third in the league with 18 sacks, led by defensive-minded head coach DeMeco Ryans.

Jameis Winston calls a play during a game against the Arizona Cardinals.
