Giants to Add Third Quarterback After Winston's Start

The New York Giants plan to add a third quarterback to their roster, but the decision will be made after Jameis Winston starts Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans. The team will convene Monday to determine the best course of action.

This move comes in the wake of a season-ending knee injury to starting quarterback Jaxson Dart, who underwent surgery Friday to repair meniscus and medial collateral ligament damage. His recovery is expected to take four to six months.

Winston, who took over for Dart last Monday night, completed 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and threw an interception with a passer rating of 37.7 in the Giants' loss. The team hopes a full week of practice and a game plan tailored to his abilities will lead to a better performance against the Titans. Winston, 32, signed a two-year, $13 million contract extension on September 6.

With Dart sidelined, the Giants are one Winston injury away from turning to Jake Haener, a 27-year-old acquired via a fourth-round draft pick in 2023. Haener has one career NFL start. The team aims to bring in an experienced quarterback capable of learning the system and providing more stability than Haener currently offers.

While the Giants prefer not to trade significant draft capital, they are considering it as an option for acquiring a quarterback. Among the potential backup options around the league mentioned are Mac Jones, J.J. McCarthy, Justin Fields, and Gardner Minshew. Jimmy Garoppolo, a former backup for the Rams, is not currently with a team.
