Giants Sign Jake Haener to Active Roster, Bolstering Quarterback Depth
The move brings the team to three active quarterbacks, allowing for strategic roster flexibility.
The New York Giants have signed quarterback Jake Haener to the active roster, a move that brings the team to three quarterbacks alongside Jameis Winston and J.J. McCarthy. This decision creates additional roster flexibility, particularly for special teams.
Previously, Haener was eligible for two more game-day practice-squad elevations. By placing him on the active roster, the Giants can now deactivate one quarterback and designate them as the emergency third-stringer. This means the third-stringer would only play if the first two quarterbacks are injured and unable to return.
This maneuver allows the Giants to potentially activate another player for special teams while ensuring they are not left without quarterback depth in case of multiple injuries. Head coach John Harbaugh had previously indicated that McCarthy could be ready to assume the No. 2 quarterback role as early as Sunday's game against the Commanders, following an intensive playbook study since his acquisition.
