Giants Remain Silent on Future of Pride Night Hats Amid Controversy
Team declines to comment on whether rainbow "SF" hats will return next season, months after pitcher protests.
Months after a controversy erupted over player protests on Pride Night, the San Francisco Giants have declined to state whether they plan to continue wearing rainbow-colored "SF" hats during the annual LGBTQ+ celebration next season.
The team's silence comes nearly four months after four Giants pitchers – Sam Hentges, JT Brubaker, Landen Roupp, and Ryan Walker – opted out of wearing the custom hats on June 12. Hentges chose to wear the team's standard baseball cap, while the other three added a Bible verse to the side of their rainbow hats.
Their actions sparked significant backlash from the community and beyond, leading to an MLB investigation. Commissioner Rob Manfred later stated that the Giants' communication with players regarding the mandatory nature of the hats was inadequate. He noted that players were not required to wear the Pride Night apparel and that the team had failed to make this clear. Manfred also confirmed that the players involved were neither fined nor disciplined.
In the aftermath of the controversy, Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey refused to answer media questions regarding the incident in late June. The team's current reticence on the matter of future Pride Night attire appears to continue this trend of avoiding public comment.
