The New York Giants announced a series of roster cuts Sunday, a significant move that included the release of 2022 first-round pick Evan Neal. Neal, who was selected seventh overall, is among four draft picks who did not make the final 53-player roster. Running back Eric Gray, a 2023 fifth-round selection, wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, a 2023 third-rounder, and linebacker Darius Muasau, a 2024 sixth-round choice, were also waived.
These players were all drafted under general manager Joe Schoen. While some of these players could potentially return to the team's practice squad if they clear waivers, their release signals a shift in the team's direction.
Neal's tenure with the Giants was marked by struggles. After flopping at the tackle position, he attempted a transition to guard. He did not play a single snap last season but was re-signed to a minimum contract in free agency. During training camp, Neal primarily lined up with the third-team offense. He now represents the only player remaining from Schoen's 2022 draft class, following the trade of offensive guard Josh Ezeudu, a 2022 third-round pick, to the Kansas City Chiefs.
In addition to Neal, other draft picks who were moved out during the preseason include defensive tackle Darius Alexander (2025 third-rounder), running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (2024 fifth-rounder), and wide receiver Darius Slayton (2019 fifth-rounder). These players survived roster cuts despite what were described as disappointing camp performances.
Cornerback Korie Black, a 2025 seventh-round pick, was placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least the first four games of the season. Black had been cut last preseason and spent time on the Jets' practice squad before rejoining the Giants due to an in-season cornerback shortage.
Tight end Thomas Fidone, a 2025 seventh-round selection, made the initial roster as the fourth tight end. His position on the roster may be subject to change once waiver wire claims are finalized.
In contrast to the released draft picks, cornerback Deonte Banks, a 2023 first-round pick, solidified his position on the roster and is contending for a starting role.
