New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart is experiencing a challenging period in training camp as he works to master new offensive coordinator Matt Nagy's system. Nagy cautioned that patience is required, noting that the offense is still in an "ongoing" feeling-out process, with significant portions of the run and pass installations yet to be completed.
During a recent practice, Dart and the offense struggled, with Nagy describing the performance as "below average" and "not good enough." The young quarterback was intercepted once by linebacker Arvell Reese, who tipped and caught his own pass. Additionally, Dart took multiple sacks and showed inconsistency, particularly during a 7-on-7 red zone drill where he completed only 2 of 8 passes.
Several factors contribute to the offense's current difficulties. Dart is operating without his primary receiver, Malik Nabers, and is adapting to a new offense helmed by new coaches and featuring new receiving options. The Giants' defense, described by Nagy as "crazy" due to its complexity under Dennard Wilson, also presents a significant challenge.
Despite the struggles, Nagy has been impressed by Dart's rapid learning pace since the spring, noting the quarterback's eagerness to absorb more information. The coaching staff is actively evaluating which plays best suit Dart and the offense while continuing to introduce new schemes. A key focus for the staff is helping Dart improve his ability to read and react to defensive schemes.
"Now we’ve got to get to the part of seeing the defense and taking it to the next level, because the kid is super talented," Nagy said. "Like if there’s one or two plays where he might not be seeing it well, let’s figure out why you’re not. And if you’re not, let’s just get rid of the play. Let’s go to a different play."
Nagy emphasized the importance of a strong running game to alleviate pressure on Dart and provide him more time to develop comfort within the offense. The team aims to establish a physical brand of football, using the run to set up play-action passes.
With the regular season opener against the Cowboys approximately a month away and the first preseason game yet to be played, there remains time for Dart and the offense to improve. The coaching staff is analyzing practice film to determine the most effective strategies for the upcoming season. Nagy indicated that the team is still in a fact-finding phase of summer preparations.
