Giants' Kicker Dominic Zvada Misses Three Field Goals in Overtime Tie
Rookie kicker Dominic Zvada's perfect start to his career was disrupted by three missed field goals, including a critical overtime attempt, in the New York Giants' 27-27 tie with the Washington Commanders.
Landover, Md. – Rookie kicker Dominic Zvada experienced a difficult outing Sunday, missing three field goals, including a 46-yard attempt that could have given the New York Giants a lead in overtime against the Washington Commanders. The game ultimately ended in a 27-27 tie.
Zvada, who had been a perfect 9-for-9 on field goals to begin his career, struggled with the conditions at Northwest Stadium, which included soggy grass and steady rain. He missed attempts from 50, 57, and 46 yards.
"Got called on, had an opportunity to put us up and wasn’t able to do it," Zvada told The Post. "I take accountability on that. It’s the NFL: When your number gets called, you have to go do your job."
Earlier in the season, Zvada had been instrumental in Giants victories, including scoring all the points in a 12-7 win against the Titans and making a 50-yard field goal in a 36-24 win over the Cardinals.
Despite the missed opportunities, head coach John Harbaugh expressed continued confidence in Zvada. "It’s high," Harbaugh said when asked about his confidence level. "He’ll learn from that. He’s going to miss at some point. So, now he’s got his first miss. Now he has three."
The Giants had an opportunity to win the game in overtime after Cam Skattebo fumbled the ball. The team's strategy was to run down the clock and attempt a field goal, but Zvada's miss on the 46-yard attempt prevented them from taking the lead. "Strategically, the idea was to run it twice, run [the clock down], get as close as we could, protect the football, which we talked about numerous times, and take the knee," Harbaugh explained. "That’s the strategy we decided on early in training camp and that’s the strategy we’ll probably do next time too."
Zvada acknowledged the disappointment but remained focused on future performance. "I want to be able to do my part and make sure that this team gets a win," he said. "It’s tough."
