Giants' J.J. McCarthy Rally Falls Short in Loss to Saints After Jameis Winston Benching
New York squanders a 10-point lead, allowing 34 unanswered points before a late surge led by McCarthy proved insufficient.
The New York Giants' promising season may have taken a critical turn Sunday, as a late rally led by quarterback J.J. McCarthy proved insufficient in a 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Giants surrendered a 10-point lead and allowed 34 consecutive points before McCarthy entered the game in the fourth quarter.
Giants quarterback Jameis Winston was benched for ball-security issues, a move that sidelined Cam Skattebo as well. By the time McCarthy took over, the Giants had already seen a comfortable lead evaporate due to defensive lapses and special teams miscues in the final 83 seconds of the first half and the initial 159 seconds of the second half.
McCarthy sparked a late surge, leading the offense to 17 unanswered fourth-quarter points. He finished the game completing 11 of 21 passes for 243 yards, setting the stage for a potential quarterback controversy. However, the Saints managed to secure a crucial first down in the final two minutes, effectively closing out the game after the Giants failed to convert on fourth-and-1 from the 14-yard line.
The Giants, now 3-2-1, suffered their first loss since Week 2 but maintain their lead atop the NFC East.
A Game-Shifting Collapse
The Saints mounted their comeback by scoring 17 points and running 17 offensive plays during a stretch where the Giants' offense was largely ineffective. A key moment came late in the first half when Daniel Carlson kicked a 58-yard field goal. Following this, Charlie Jones fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which the Saints capitalized on.
Further compounding the Giants' issues, they allowed a 2-yard touchdown pass with one second remaining in the first half, making the score 10-10 despite what had been a controlled performance for much of the half. The Saints took a 17-10 lead in the third quarter after a roughing the passer penalty on Kayvon Thibodeaux aided their drive, culminating in a 31-yard touchdown catch by Alvin Kamara.
Jameis Winston's day ended after throwing his second interception, which directly led to another Saints touchdown. He was replaced by McCarthy for the final 12 minutes of the game.
Offensive Struggles and Running Game Woes
The Giants' offense struggled for much of the game, particularly their rushing attack, which faced one of the league's worst run defenses. Over the first three quarters, the team managed only a 20-yard gain on a reverse and a combined 17 yards on 14 carries from other ball-carriers. Najee Harris, Devin Singletary, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. combined for minimal yardage before Skattebo saw action in the fourth quarter.
The Giants opened the game with possession but failed to advance, later scoring on a 93-yard touchdown drive initiated by Tyrone Tracy Jr.'s 17-yard touchdown catch. Dominic Zvada added a 34-yard field goal before the team's struggles began.
