Giants GM Joe Schoen Eyes Trade Market Ahead of Deadline

The New York Giants, currently holding a 4-2-1 record and sole possession of first place in the NFC East, are set to explore potential roster enhancements as the November 10 trade deadline approaches. General Manager Joe Schoen indicated on Tuesday that the team will "canvas the league" to identify opportunities, while also emphasizing a consideration of both immediate needs and future implications.

Schoen stated that significant injuries, including those to quarterback Jaxson Dart and defensive player Brian Burns, will not deter the team from pursuing trades. "Again, we’re going to look at it from a short term and long term, any move that we make, if that makes sense," Schoen said. "That really won’t play much into it right at this moment."

The Giants' approach will be influenced by their draft capital, as they notably lack fourth- and fifth-round picks in the upcoming draft. Schoen noted that this situation might rule out certain players if their asking price is too high, potentially leading the team to explore future draft picks or evaluate contract statuses and depth.

Recent trades around the league, such as the Colts sending guard Quentin Nelson to the Seahawks and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the 49ers, signal a shifting market. The Giants may look to bolster their defensive line, offensive line, or running back positions.

In the 2022 season, when the Giants also made a playoff run, Schoen's most significant trade deadline move was sending Kadarius Toney to the Chiefs for draft picks. The team's proactive approach to roster building in that season did not involve major trade acquisitions before the deadline. This year, Schoen acknowledged that the team has been in contact with other organizations that have already made trades.

Despite facing unexpected circumstances due to injuries, the Giants have earned a position of strength heading into the latter half of the season. Schoen expressed that the team has earned the right to play meaningful games in November and December, a significant turnaround from previous seasons where their record at the bye week was considerably weaker.

The decision on whether to add talent or rely on the current roster will become clearer as the trade deadline nears. "We’re gonna canvas the league and see what’s available and what the cost may be to upgrade the roster," Schoen said, "and if it makes sense, we’ll certainly do that."
