The New York Giants are entrusting their defensive coordinator, Dennard Wilson, with the significant challenge of curbing Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott's long-standing success against the team. This marks Wilson's debut in the role, as he steps into a position where previous coordinators have struggled to find answers for Prescott.
Prescott has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness against the Giants since his rookie season. In the 3,561 days since December 11, 2016, the Cowboys quarterback has thrown 223 touchdown passes and achieved a 14-game winning streak against New York, a streak that concluded technically last season when he was removed at halftime of a non-consequential Week 18 game. During this span, Prescott has maintained a quarterback rating of 101.5 against the Giants, with 31 touchdowns and nine interceptions, while being sacked only 18 times on 574 dropbacks.
Wilson acknowledged the caliber of the opponent. "He's a top quarterback in the NFL," Wilson stated. "He's seen it all. He's very decisive with where he's going with the ball, he gets the ball out of his hands quick. They have elite receivers and their tight ends are good. So, they have weapons, both on the outside and inside."
Despite the historical data and Prescott's proven ability to exploit the Giants' defense, Wilson expressed a determination to forge a new identity for the team's defense. "We're going to be unapologetic on how we play," he said. "We're going to be decisive in what we do. We're going to play with an edge. We're going to play with toughness. We're going to bring violence. That's our M.O. That's how the guys have been going out — doing their work every day, their daily business. And that's how we're going to play."
Prescott himself is aware of the potential shift, noting the Giants' new coaching staff. "He's obviously coached a lot of winning teams," Prescott said of head coach John Harbaugh. "To me, you expect the game to go into the fourth quarter. That's kind of our message: You can't win it in those first three, so be ready and do whatever it takes to go get it in the fourth. Any time you're playing a good coach like that and his winning history, you've got to be ready for it."
Adding another layer to the matchup is the cornerback Greg Newsome's recent comments regarding the Giants' secondary and receiver George Pickens' response. This exchange, stemming from past rivalry, highlights the heightened intensity surrounding the upcoming game.
Wilson also identified Pickens as a significant threat. "He's a matchup problem one-on-one," Wilson commented. "He can catch the contested football down the air. So, he's always been a really good player."
Previous defensive coordinators who have faced Prescott's success against the Giants include Steve Spagnuolo, who has since moved on to become a successful defensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as James Bettcher, Patrick Graham, Wink Martindale, and Shane Bowen.
