The New York Giants released wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster on Tuesday in a corresponding move after signing running back Najee Harris, according to reports. Smith-Schuster had been competing for a depth role at wide receiver for the Giants.

His departure could create an opening for Odell Beckham Jr. to secure a spot on the team, although his roster status is not yet guaranteed. The Giants’ wide receiver depth chart currently lists Beckham Jr. as the No. 3 outside receiver behind Malik Nabers and Darnell Mooney. Darius Slayton and Calvin Austin III are also listed at other wide receiver positions, with rookie Malachi Fields showing promise.

Smith-Schuster, a former Steeler like Harris, signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Giants. Last season, he recorded 345 receiving yards in 17 games for the Kansas City Chiefs. He is entering his 10th NFL season should he sign with another team.

The contracts for Mooney and Austin highlight the team's investment in the receiver position. Mooney signed a one-year deal with $3 million fully guaranteed, potentially worth up to $10 million with incentives, while Austin’s contract includes $450,000 in guaranteed money. Nabers' health remains a factor as he recovers from a torn ACL.
