During a critical situation drill at New York Giants training camp on Monday, quarterback Jaxson Dart demonstrated awareness by sliding to avoid a hit, a move that drew praise from head coach John Harbaugh and teammates.
The play unfolded as Dart scrambled outside the pocket during a simulated game-winning scenario. Instead of attempting to gain extra yardage and potentially take a hit, Dart opted to slide near the sideline, keeping the clock running and preserving himself from injury. This decision was met with audible approval from the Giants' sideline.
"It was great," Harbaugh stated, commenting on Dart's decision, which addressed a previous area of concern for the coach regarding the young quarterback's tendency to avoid sliding. "He ran around the corner. Got the first down. Slid in bounds. Kept the clock running. All those things were well done."
While Dart's smart decision earned commendation, he also experienced a turnover during practice. He threw an interception that was deflected by safety Ar’Darius Washington and returned for a touchdown by defensive lineman Darius Alexander. This play highlighted Alexander's potential but marked a blemish on Dart's performance ledger for the day.
In other practice news, outside linebacker Abdul Carter did not participate due to a hand/finger injury but is expected back soon. Center John Michael Schmitz (concussion), wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee), and offensive lineman Lucas Patrick (knee) also missed practice. Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt went down on the final play but is expected to be fine. Defensive lineman Chauncey Golston left early after hitting his head, and cornerback Greg Newsome II is reportedly fine after a non-contact knee scare on Saturday. Dart himself was cleared after an instance where he was stepped on early in drills.
