Giants Announce J.J. McCarthy as Starting Quarterback

The New York Giants have named J.J. McCarthy their starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, marking a significant shift in the team's lineup. McCarthy, acquired by the Giants less than three weeks ago in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, will be the team's third starting quarterback of the season.

McCarthy takes over for Jameis Winston, who replaced Jaxson Dart in Week 2 after Dart suffered a knee injury. Winston's tenure as starter saw inconsistent performances, leading to the decision to promote McCarthy. Winston led the Giants to a 2-1-1 record in his four starts, including a comeback effort against the Saints where McCarthy sparked a rally in the fourth quarter after replacing Winston.

Despite trailing significantly against the Saints, McCarthy's performance in the final quarter garnered attention. He threw for 243 yards, a mark that stands as one of the highest fourth-quarter passing yard totals for a non-starting quarterback in the last 25 years. The Giants' final possession ended with an incomplete pass from McCarthy on fourth down, narrowly missing an opportunity to secure a win.

McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft by the Vikings, previously struggled in Minnesota. He missed his rookie season due to a torn meniscus and later saw limited action due to injuries. Last season, he started intermittently, finishing with an 6-4 record, 11 touchdown passes, and 12 interceptions.

This start will be McCarthy's first since Week 18 of last season. He returns to Houston's Reliant Stadium, the site of Michigan's national championship victory in 2024, where he led his team to a win. His previous NFL experience was hampered by injuries, and he was eventually passed over for the starting role in Minnesota this season.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh confirmed McCarthy would remain the starter going forward, indicating that this decision is not temporary. Harbaugh stated that the team had not considered waiting until after the upcoming bye week to make the switch, emphasizing that the decision was based on performance and readiness.

McCarthy expressed that he feels comfortable with the Giants' playbook and is optimistic about his fit within the new team and system. He described the recent weeks as a "whirlwind" but believes his past experiences, even those that did not go as planned, have prepared him for this opportunity. "Every time you step on the field, it’s an opportunity," McCarthy said. "Whether you’re the starting guy, whether you’re not, you have a chance to prove yourself, prove it to your peers, and prove it to everyone around you. And at the end of the day, I approach it the same way."
