Giants Activate J.J. McCarthy for Week 4 Game, Hinting at Special Package of Plays
The surprising move to activate three quarterbacks, including McCarthy, suggests a potential role for the rookie beyond emergency backup.
The New York Giants made a surprising move for Week 4, activating rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy for their game against the Arizona Cardinals. This decision, which includes activating two other quarterbacks, Jameis Winston and Jake Haener, has fueled speculation that McCarthy could be utilized in a specific package of plays.
By placing McCarthy on the active 53-man roster, the Giants have created an opportunity for him to serve as the primary backup. Previously, even if he was on the roster, he could have been made inactive and still used as an emergency third-stringer only if both Winston and Haener were unavailable. The elevation of Haener from the practice squad on Saturday further clarifies the team's quarterback positioning for the game.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy addressed the possibility of McCarthy playing a limited role earlier in the week, stating, "We just have to see each and every day how much can he handle, and then we continue to throw more and more at him. And then we have to make our own judgment on, ‘Now, what is he doing on the field, and where does that take him as a No. 2 or No. 3?'"
This strategic activation could allow the Giants to leverage McCarthy's mobility, particularly in short-yardage situations, an area where his legs could provide a different threat compared to Winston. The team's inactives for the game include safety Ar’Darius Washington, running back Devin Singletary, cornerback Nikko Reed, defensive lineman Jihad Ward, tight end Thomas Fidone II, and defensive tackle Bobby Jamison-Travis.
